Black Hole in our Backyard

Black holes represent some of the most violent forces known in nature, and now there’s one closer than ever. At least it looks that way.

The researchers who made this discovery studied the orbital movements of a two star system and noticed that the motion seemed to be moved by a third, unseen body in the system. As it doesn’t give off any light and appears to be quite massive it’s theorized that there is a black hole tugging on the two stars.

Gravitational motion was also used to predict the existence of a body beyond the orbit of Uranus, whose orbit couldn’t be fully explained without another gravitational influence acting on it. This prompted a search that led to the discovery of Pluto by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930, you can read more about it here:
