Catch More Perseids Tonight

The Perseid meteor shower is peaking this week, be sure to join us for our virtual program tonight Wednesday 8/12 @ 6:00 PM to learn more about this meteor shower and how best to view it! You can still sign up, email Lexie Martinez at LBmartin@cityofwestminster.us to register.

Most of Colorado is affected by a layer of smoke and generally hazy conditions, but that doesn’t mean you can’t catch more Perseid meteors tonight!

Your chances are always better after midnight when the night-facing side of Earth is aligned closer to the “apex” (the point which Earth is moving in space). From suburban areas you should be able to catch about 30 meteors per hour under ideal conditions, which is roughly a meteor every two minutes, assuming you don’t miss any. For most people you can expect to see half of that rate.

If you’d like a printable Sky Guide with meteor shower viewing tips, you can download it here: https://www.standleylakestargazing.com/sky-guides

Don’t forget to check out Jupiter, Saturn and Mars as they line up in the evening sky!

Check back each weekday @ 5:00 pm for more observing guides and science news!
