Constellation Finder: Boötes, The Herdsman
Boötes is a famous Spring constellation, outlining the figure of a herdsman or shepherd.
It is one of the easiest constellations to spot owing to the relative brightness of its main stars, and that it bears a striking resemblance to a kite. The brightest star, Arcturus, is at the base of the kite pattern and has a distinct reddish color, and is the fourth brightest star in the sky.
You can use an old trick to locate this star, first find the Big Dipper and follow the curve of the handle and it will lead you straight to Bootes, all you have to remember is the phrase “arc to Arcturus”.
It’s best viewed after 10 pm rising in the South-Eastern sky, the pattern of the kite is lying on its left side at that time.
