International Observe the Moon Night Is Here - Sky & Telescope

Get ready to admire our Moon! Saturday September 26th is International Observe the Moon Night. This event, which debuted in 2010, is very much the thrust of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite mission teams. It's also sponsored by other NASA institutes dedicated to increasing our understanding of and appreciation for the Moon, such as the Lunar and Planetary Institute, the Planetary Science Institute, NASA's Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute, and several others.

Standley Lake Stargazing together with Standley Lake Regional Park will be hosting a separate event shortly (our original program was affected by a service outage) in which we’ll share observing tips and history, along with a discussion of the Moon’s role in affecting wildlife behavior.

Here’s Sky & Telescope’s weekly observing highlights:

This Week's Sky at a Glance, September 25 - October 3 - Sky & Telescope

■ Yesterday evening, the Moon shone close to Jupiter. Now it's Saturn's turn to pair up with the Moon, as shown below. All week, as the Moon steps farther east, the two giant planets continue shining nearly level in the south at dusk. They tilt to the right as evening advances.

Plan to join us next Wed. 9/30 for our program about “Apollo 13” as we look into the engineering and humanity behind this famous story. Email Register@StandleyLakeStargazing.com to sign up!

Check back each weekday @ 5:00 pm for more observing guides and science news!
