Weekend Update: Saturn, Jupiter and the Summer Milky Way

Weather continues to improve for us, offering better views of Jupiter, Saturn, the rich starfields of the summer Milky Way, and the giant overhead asterism called Summer Triangle.

Use the accompanying chart to locate these and other celestial icons this weekend! The image is drawn at 10:30 PM and will continue to move earlier each night.

Sky & Telescope’s weekly update offers more details on upcoming highlights, check it out here:

■ How early in twilight can you spot Jupiter and then Saturn glimmering into view? Look for them in the south-southeast, as shown below. (To their right, you'll need binoculars to pick out the Sagittarius Teapot stars until twilight is nearly over.) Later the Jupiter-Saturn pair turns perfectly horizontal, a little earlier each night.

Check back each weekday @ 5:00 pm for more observing guides and science news!
