Jupiter and Saturn Closing In

Jupiter and Saturn are perennial favorite gas giants that are endlessly captivating to observe, and this year has been no exception. On December 21st they’ll appear closer together than they have for 800 years in what’s known as a conjunction, but you don’t have to wait to start appreciating this special pairing.

Use this chart to locate the two planets in the south-western sky after sunset. You can start taking note of their positions regularly as we move closer to the 21st and see their apparent motion as they draw closer to each other.

Don’t forget to start keeping an eye out for Geminid meteors as we ramp up to the peak display on Dec. 12.
