Ride Along During a Shuttle Launch

This week we’re exploring NASA’s iconic Space Shuttle, the vehicle that ferried crew, cargo and critical payloads into space for 30 years before retiring in 2011.

Today’s video shows a ride-along view from a camera mounted on one of the Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs), the pair of white tubes that provide thrust during launch and separate from the orbiter stack once the fuel is spent.

While these videos are impressive visually, they also capture the launch sounds from a perspective you’ve probably never heard before. NASA enlisted the help of Skywalker Sound (of Star Wars fame) to tease out details from the raw audio and mix it in a way that adds a new layer of experience to the clip. Keep in mind that these are the actual sounds of a space shuttle launch, no sound effects were added to achieve the final mix, it’s simply highly refined processing of the original sound!
