Mars in 3D
What does Mars look like in infrared? What do laser scans of the surface reveal? NASA has a page dedicated to these and more questions about the Martian topography.
The terrain maps that have been gathered over the years from numerous orbiters show intricate surface features in a new light that helps scientists learn more about Mars’ history. You can view highly detailed surface roughness maps, thermal inertia maps and even laser altimeter readings over the entire planet, in an interactive 3D model.
Be sure to catch Mars in the eastern sky after sunset this week as we lead up to opposition on 10/13!
