What Causes the 'Christmas Star'?

As we near the exceptional pairing of the “Christmas Star” - Jupiter and Saturn closing in towards each other on the solstice (Dec. 21) - it’s only natural to wonder just why they’re moving towards each other, and seemingly quickly.

Particularly in astronomy, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here’s a diagram showing the line of sight alignment that creates the appearance that Jupiter and Saturn are almost sitting on top of each other as seen from Earth.
