Winter Solstice and Saturn-Jupiter 'Christmas Star' Conjunction

Tonight’s the night! Not only is today the Winter Solstice, marking the first day of Winter, we have the long-awaited conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, in which they’ll appear closer to each other than they have for almost 800 years.

To spot this extraordinary event, head out around sunset and look south-west just above the horizon. Jupiter and Saturn will appear as two very close points of light to eagle-eyed observers, and many people will just see them as a single bright point of light. The pair is low on the horizon and will be best viewed the first hour after sunset, and is visible anywhere with a clear view of the horizon.
