Late July Planets, Moon and NEOWISE

With all the hype surrounding the rare visit of comet NEOWISE it would be easy to overlook the appearance of the two gas giants Saturn and Jupiter in the evening sky.

Use the accompanying chart to find them in the southern sky after 9:30 PM, just east of Sagittarius (which resembles a teapot). Jupiter and Saturn will continue to climb higher each night and will be prominent after twilight as we move into August.

While you’re out, check out the first quarter Moon, and be on the lookout for early meteors from the Perseid meteor shower, which we’ll cover in-depth in the coming weeks!

Check back each weekday @ 5:00 pm for more observing guides and science news!
